Growing tips: Pumpkins – sowing and planting

  • In warm areas: From mid-April under fleece
  • In cooler areas: From early/mid-May
Please always ensure the soil temperature is high enough!
  • Planting guidelines:
    Planting until mid/late June
    Sowing until early/mid-June

Growing conditions

  • The use of plastic sheeting facilitates weed control (water-permeable or with a drip hose)
  • In rows with a row spacing of 75 cm or more
  • Fabric mulch can be used until flowering
  • N requirement approx. 120–140 kg/ha
  • Irrigation is necessary on light soils to ensure a good yield

General tips for growing pumpkins

  • Pre-germinated seedlings save time and are ideal for pre- and post-croppingin the field
  • Young plants continue to grow rapidly in the field after watering and protect the crop against heavy weed pressure
  • Biodegradable mulch film with drip hoses and ridges promote growth and protect against leaf diseases and fruit damage
  • Also ideal for cultivation in polytunnels and greenhouses

Paper-Pot-Volmary.jpg

Our 84type paper pot for vegetable field cultivation

The paper pot provides good protection for the delicate, loose roots of cucurbit plants and holds them securely in place. This also makes it easier to remove young, freshly rooted plants from the tray, thereby significantly reducing the risk of damage to the young plants.

The paper pots also offer a clear advantage for growth. This is because the airy, warm soil in the pot ensures good water retention and thus rapid continued growth after planting.

A further advantage is the increased yield for high-value varieties. This is because the protected, warm pre-cultivation allows very vigorous young plants to develop.
