Cultivation notes for Thunbergia alata 'Sunny Susy®'

Thunbergia_Pyramid.png

Pyramid cultur

Potting

Pot and stake the young plants immediately after delivery.

Staking

Staking the plants is absolutely necessary to allow them to climb high. This can be done either during potting or after rooting. To do this, Tonkin sticks are inserted into the substrate next to the plant and tied together at the top.
- 12 or 13 cm pot --> 40 to 50 cm Tonkin stakes
- 3 L container --> 60 to 80 cm Tonkin stakes

Three stakes per pot are inserted in a triangle.

Pruning
After rooting (approx. 14 days after potting), the plants should be lightly pinched back.

Pinching
Pinching back 'Sunny Susy®' is not normally necessary for pyramid cultivation in containers.

Hanging Baskets

Potting

Pot the young plants immediately after delivery.

Staking
It is not necessary to stake hanging baskets. At the beginning of cultivation, the hangers are often not yet attached to the hanging basket so that the vines of the Thunbergia can grow down over the edge of the pot. The hangers are only attached at the end of cultivation. This results in an evenly and beautifully trailing Thunbergia hanging basket.

Pruning
After rooting (approx. 14 days after potting), the plants should be lightly pinched back.

Stamping
Pruning 'Sunny Susy®' is not normally necessary for hanging basket cultivation.

Pot culture

Potting

The young plants should be potted immediately after delivery. To achieve good pot filling, two young plants should be placed in each pot. It is advisable to cultivate the pot culture on tables, as several steps must be carried out by hand.

Staking
After rooting (approx. 14 days after potting), the plants should be lightly pinched back for the first time. For well-filled potted plants, the plants should be pinched back regularly to reduce the length of the long tendrils. This shaping of the plant should be carried out at least three times during the cultivation period and, if possible, not in the last week of cultivation in order to retain sufficient flowers on the pot.

Stamping
The compression of Thunbergia is particularly difficult. Chemical inhibitors have little or no satisfactory effect. It is therefore advisable to choose a rapid cultivation method and to pinch back the plants several times. Regular application of the plant fortifier MK Blume in combination with horsetail has proven to have a positive effect on compact, well-branched growth.
